Goldfish, hoverboards, cloud-surfing cherubs: what to expect from Easy Life’s gig at The O2 in ‘Fortnite’

The safety on the doors will be watching for unmanned rocket launchers rather than sausage rolls that are prejudiced. Inside, snack stalls and VIP lounges are replaced by space age playzones, and the laws of physics no longer use. Since the gig begins, you’re transported into an office block, watching a gigantic choice R&B band playing outside; until long you’re inside a bass, hoverboarding around a futuristic cityscape and also being flushed down a lavatory.

It’s any experience in The O2 you’ve ever known, and Easy Life’s headline show is defined as a literal game-changer. For one week only, Greenwich’s most legendary enormodome is being uploaded to Fortnite, with several literary surprises from store, and Leicester’s Easy Life are taking full advantage of their mind-expanding chances of the virtual O2 stunning.

“You can do anything,” says singer Murray Matraversdown a Zoom phone from the real-life O2. “The moment we got told we were playing Fortnite, everybody was like ‘Well, certainly we’re likely to be forced into characters in the game, and that’s going to be the end of it’. Us, together with our little closed minds, had no idea that the chances were so much broader than that. We’re playing over the O2 in Fortnite, real world us variations within a digital universe. ”

“From what we’ve seen, it’s totally bonkers,” says bassist Sam Hewitt. “It’s a completely reinvented version of the O2 inside. In a live gig the ‘player’ must stand there and listen and can either dancing or not, or sing together or not. But what’s the player likely to be able to do inside a digital gig? In cases like this, surf through a cityscape on a hoverboard, get flushed down a toilet, slip down endless sand dunes, it’s mad. ”

Gigs inside games have become increasingly more bold and sophisticated way of engaging with millions of forward-thinking music lovers, particularly through lockdown, if they turned into a more adventurous form of livestreaming. IDLES and Charli XCX played festivals in Minecraft, Korn did a show in AdventureQuest 3D and The Offspring risked more potent heckling than customary in World Of Tanks. Easy Life aren’t the first action that the play a show in Fortnite possibly; DJ Marshmello had space mercenaries, catwomen and angelic warriors skydiving around a digital club arena and attempting to crush his decks using Marshmallo hammers in the first show in 2019, and last year a digitised, mile-high Travis Scott crash landed in a purple glowing meteorite coated in fairgrounds to perform a set there to 12 million lovers.

Each occasion is out to transcend the past, and Easy Life will be the first to appear in real-life form in Fortnite, albeit within six mind-blowing worlds, one for every one of the songs from their debut album Life’s A Beach they’ll be playing. &ldquoWe can do anything,” says Murray. “There has been lots of fish in our record, so we wanted to do something with a fish, so we decided to go within fish. We’re in amongst loads of plastic in this bad dying fish, then it explodes in the end. And then we get flushed down a toilet and wind up in this metropolis, and up in the oceans. ”

“You can drive through the oceans while we perform around you on clouds such as cherubs,” says Sam, describing that there will be improved interactivity compared to preceding Fortnite gigs. “All of the areas are for the most part open spaces besides a couple, so that there ’s lots of exploring to do and there’s ’s lots of hidden facets people, little references to the record, Easter eggs everywhere. And if you finish a specific quantity of the gig then you get collectible tags to put up in the real game and the lobby track, which is part of the game too. I think that you ’ve made goldfish you can throw at every other instrument, after a certain point. ”

“It’ll never replace playing live audio but it’s just like a different art kind,” says Murray, “as it combines gaming with live audio with this new component of video production, it’s an amalgamation of a great deal of things we enjoy doing this we’re really excited. ” Are you really concerned about getting assaulted by the different class of stage invaders? Murray laughs. “We’re immune. ”

As the idea of the multiverse takes shape — essentially a digital solution to real life — matches such as Fortnite and Minecraft hope to become cultural destinations as much as gambling platforms, hosting movie premieres and becoming a regular tour stop for bands alongside routine touring schedules. “It’s definitely an environment to be utilised a lot more in the future,” says Sam. “Just from this limited experience here with O2, because of the infinite possibilities I think other musicians will wake up to the idea of having the ability to realise their thoughts behind their music and that which has motivated them to do what they’ve done, then put it in this ridiculous ancestral universe. A artist’s dream is to have the ability to realise all of their potential. ”

Are virtual displays in huge games such as Fortnite reaching a curious captive audience who ’s maybe too young to go to many gigs? “Yeah, and it’s global audience also,” says Murray. “Loads of gamers have been in Asia and South America and those territories we’ve never seen and probably will never get a chance to visit unless we actually do things like this. So we hopefully get to entice another kind of audience, a totally different demographic. ” “We’ve consumed our music in other games that’s a lot of fans have found our music,” Sam adds. “So this is definitely a path through to different aspects of the business. I’m only now waking up to the reality that there ’s this whole other side for this. The percentage of people playing games is only growing exponentially. So, I feel like people are gonna latch on to this as an opportunity to experience social networking. ”

Sam is Easy Life’s premier gamer, fresh to Fortnite (“I’m Slushy Cluck in the present time, that I’m very proud of”-RRB- but an Epic Games lifer. “My first game that I can remember playing was an Epic Games match,” he says. “It was Jazz Jackrabbit. It was this 2D platformer where you played as a rabbit shooting aliens and stuff like this. Epic Games have already been with me since the start, I remember going to a gambling cafe and playing Unreal Tournamentback when the first multiplayer online stuff was coming out. I’ve already been there with them, and now they’ve rewarded me helplessly by being involved in Fortnite. ”

Are you a sneaky stealther or even some guns-blazing hero? “I’m more of a stay out of injury ’s way and pick them off from a distance kind of participant,” he says. “I love to have the ability to take my time. Definitely long variety. ” And now that the sights of his sniper goldfish are educated on the Digital future…

Fortnite is absolutely free to play just about everything at the moment. The 02 Arena will likely be in the match nowadays, and Easy Life will perform their gig on Thursday.
